Summary
In a future where human consciousness can be digitized and downloaded into new bodies—"sleeves"—death is a temporary inconvenience for those who can afford it. Takeshi Kovacs, a former U.N. Envoy turned mercenary, is hauled out of storage 250 years after his last death and dropped into a stranger's body to investigate the apparent suicide of a man wealthy enough to refuse to stay dead. Altered Carbon weaves cyberpunk hardware with hard-boiled detective fiction, asking what is left of a person when the body is just a costume.
