Summary

The human circulatory system is responsible for the transport of blood and lymph throughout the body. The cardiovascular system is a part of the circulatory system that transports blood. The lymphatic system is the other part of the circulatory system and it transports lymph.

Key Ideas

The heart is a key organ in the cardiovascular system, it is a pump that moves blood throughout the body.

Terms

Heart - a hollow muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system by contraction and relaxation.

Artery - any of the muscular-walled tubes forming part of the circulation system by which blood (mainly that which has been oxygenated) is conveyed from the heart to all parts of the body.

Vein - any of the tubes forming part of the blood circulation system of the body, carrying in most cases oxygen-depleted blood toward the heart.

Capillary - any of the fine branching blood vessels that form a network between the arterioles and venules.

Blood - the red liquid that circulates in the arteries and veins of humans and other vertebrate animals, carrying oxygen to and carbon dioxide from the tissues of the body.

Lymph - a colorless fluid containing white blood cells, which bathes the tissues and drains through the lymphatic system into the bloodstream.

Lymphatic System - the network of vessels through which lymph drains from the tissues into the blood.

Cardiovascular System - the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands.

Circulatory System - the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands.
